With over 60 years of successful entrepreneurship, Tolaram Group has evolved from being traders to manufacturers to brand builders, establishing our leadership in several industries across different geographies.
The Group is named after Seth Tolaram, who was a well-regarded physician in Sindh in Colonial India. Seth Tolaram’s primary occupation was the welfare of the poor and sickly, and the Group carries his philanthropic ideals to this day.
Seth Tolaram's youngest son, Khanchand Vaswani, migrated to Indonesia from Sindh in 1930s and set up Toko Vaswani, in Malang, in 1948 after the World War II.
Khanchand Vaswani's son, Mohan Vaswani (current Chairman), joined the family business in 1957.
Our Vice Chairman, Vishamkar Adnani, joined the Group in 1961 and helped grow the textiles shop into a larger retail, wholesale and trading business in fabrics and garments.
Over the next few years, we expanded our reach in Indonesia and started operations in other cities.
In 1968, we set up an office in Singapore.
We became Textiles manufacturers with the set up of our first facility set up in Batu, Indonesia in 1970. Subsequently more textiles-related manufacturing plants were established in Indonesia and other countries.
We also relocated our Corporate Headquarters to Singapore in 1975 to expand internationally. The following year, we were one of the first few Singaporean companies to enter Nigeria.
Leadership of the Group was also extended to include senior professionals at the corporate level.
The Group diversified from its core Textiles businesses into Real Estate and Consumer Goods. It also marked the introduction of the third-generation family members into the business.
In 1982, we ventured into fibres manufacturing in the US. The same year, we built a residential condominium in Singapore.
In 1987, the Group expanded into polymers manufacturing with a plant in the UK.
We embarked on an expansion phase and took our manufacturing presence to 18 countries across the globe. We also diversified further into industries such as Paper Products, Distribution and others.
In 1995, we ventured into Estonia after the lifting of the Iron Curtain.
The following year, Tolaram entered a joint venture with the Salim Group, opening the first instant noodle factory in Nigeria.
The Group consolidated our businesses in our chosen geographies and industries. During this period, the Group evolved from being just manufacturers to managing the entire value chain.
We expanded our presence in the Consumer Goods sector and ventured into the Infrastructure and Energy sectors.
The Group completed building and relocated our Corporate Headquarters in Singapore to 1A International Business Park.
Furthering ourselves to become brand builders, we developed and grew our brands in the different industry sectors. These brands remain market leaders in their respective segments today.
We also made our name known in the Digital Services sector in Nigeria and Indonesia.
The Group has marked over 60 years of successful international entrepreneurship in emerging markets. We are focused on growth in these four business spheres: Consumer Goods, Digital Services, Energy and Infrastructure in emerging markets.
